"We the People In Order To..."
Two hundred thirty two years ago, Thomas Jefferson authored the Declaration of Independence, and with representatives of the 13 colonies signed it, thereby laying the cornerstone for America to become a free nation. Independence Day is a crucial reminder for Americans that we have freely given our consent for a limited government whose sole purpose is to protect our lives, property, and rights. (Thu, 3 Jul 2008)
California Smackdown 2008-09
California could reduce its $20 billion budget deficit without increasing taxes or finding new sources of revenue. We could make many agencies and commissions self-supporting through user fees and eliminate useless agencies and commissions altogether. Still another approach would be to compare the services an agency or commission provides and determine whether the same service is being offered by a private company. (Sat, 21 Jun 2008)
Who's to Blame for the Subprime Meltdown?
Just a few years ago, lending institutions were spending considerable time in courtrooms, accused of practicing so-called redlining, predatory lending, and discrimination. So social justice and housing advocates pressured Congress to encourage lenders to make easy loans to make home ownership available to everybody. But the easy-money lending practices had unintentional consequences. Now political opportunists want to handcuff the lending business to stricter federal regulations. If they succeed, perhaps only the wealthy with high credit scores will be able to get a home loan. This scenario harkens back to the days when the only people who could get a bank loan were those who didn't need one. (Wed, 18 Jun 2008)

A Practical Way to Reduce Government Abuse of Power
The abuse of power at all levels government in America is widespread and expanding rapidly. The only way the trend toward expanding tyranny can be reversed and our lost liberties restored is through the restoration of accountability in government. To accomplish this goal, we must replace the current incentive structure with one that rewards performance by government employees consistent with peaceful private interests. (Mon, 21 Apr 2008)
The Formula for a Police State
Having a double standard that favors police is the formula for a police state. Whether in investigations, arrests, trials, or punishment, police should never get away with anything for which a member of the public would face severe consequences. (Mon, 14 Apr 2008)
Opening CalPERS to Private Accounts Is a Bad Investment
Assemblyman Kevin de Leon (D-Los Angeles) decided that not enough Californians are saving properly for their retirement. To address this concern, he introduced a bill that would open up the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) to private-sector investors. If legislators really want to encourage saving, they should reduce the state's heavy tax burden and let people keep more of their money to begin with. Your Vote Counts Better on Paper
California should replace all voting machines and scannable forms with papers ballots, hand-counted in each precinct. If we want to minimize election fraud and computer glitches, we need to completely eliminate automation and have human intelligence count the ballots in a visible process. Otherwise, democracy itself will be in danger of collapse as voters will increasingly question whether their votes count or whether those who do the counting are really in charge. (Mon, 17 Mar 2008)
